Walt Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1901 and at a very early age, started his career as one of America’s foremost artists. At 7 years of age, Walt Disney would sell his sketches to his neighbors, all the while honing his abilities and tuning his imagination into what would eventually become a national treasure. So intent was he in his love for art that Walt Disney would attend McKinley High School in Chicago by day and at night, he would attend classes at the Academy of Fine Arts.

After spending two years in the Red Cross during the war, Walt Disney found himself in Kansas City working as a cartoonist for an advertising company. Three years later, he left Kansas for the bright lights of Hollywood with only $40 to his name, his drawing materials and a completed film that featured a mix of animation and live-action.

In California, Walt met up with his brother, Roy O. Disney, and the two founded their own production company, producing their first “Alice Comedy” featurette in the rear of a Hollywood real estate office. In 1925, Walt Disney married Lillian Bounds, one of his first employees. In 1928, Walt Disney created the character that would change his life and the history of the film industry – Mickey Mouse. Mickey made his debut in the world’s first audio-synchronized cartoon, Steamboat Willie, at the Colony Theatre in New York on November 18, 1928. Always ahead of the industry, Walt Disney was usually one of the first filmmakers to integrate new and innovative techniques into his films and artwork, including such elements as Technicolor and multiplane camera techniques. He was also one of the first to produce full-color television programs like Wonderful World of Color in 1961.

Walt Disney launched Disneyland in 1955 and in 1965 he started designing his plan to help improve urban life in America through his EPCOT program. After seven years of planning and 52 months of construction, Walt Disney World finally opened in 1971 in Florida, with his highly anticipated Epcot Center opening in 1982.

Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966 so he never got to see the finished Epcot Center or Walt Disney World amusement park, but today his company is one of the most successful companies in the history of the United States.
